Melinda Earl was trying to produce textured still lifes using oils, plaster, and cloth in her garage in 1994. Still, after four years of perfecting her craft, the single mother and trained painter founded the PhotoStone company, which developed a hand-printing process for making tiles. PhotoStone later turned into StoneImpressions, a North American company that designs and produces stone tiles.

StoneImpressions manufactures different tiles and tile products for interior and exterior use. They make artisan stone tiles, custom tile designs, and stone impressions like tile murals and accent tiles. These are used in bathrooms, kitchens, floors, and fireplaces. StoneImpressions tiles are also used for flat lays, countertops, vanity tops, and backsplashes. Their stone tiles are sourced from Italy, Mexico and the Balkans and manufactured at the state-of-the-art facility in San Diego, California.
